Week one is in the books!!! First of all, thanks to all that came out and supported all of our Junior Brave squads, especially with some of that bone-chilling spring wind blowing steady all day. With that said, we had some really great showings this weekend as a whole.

1st and 2nd grade were the first to team to take the field as they battled the elements and came out on top 7-0 against a tough Kennewick Lions squad. They continued their Saturday with another nail biter coming down to a play on the one-yard line as time expired. They fought hard, but the pesky Leopards pulled out a close one 7-0. Coach Travis has got the kids dialed in and ready to go for week 2.

These guys battled all day and had a great showing. Starting the day off with a shutout win over a tough Junior Panthers squad. Next, they squared off against crosstown rivals, the Southridge Suns and fell a little bit short in a close one 4-7. They closed out their Saturday against a very talented Riverhawks team. Coach Zack said, “they had speed out there today, a lot of it”. In a game that was a lot closer than the final score indicates (because of a late score in the final seconds) coach Zach expects the kids to bounce back after a tough weekend of hard fought close games.

The Red squad started their day off very nicely with some great plays on the defensive side of the ball which got the offense rolling. They ended up with 19 points and holding the Lions to only 2 points in the first game. Finishing out their day against the Riverhawks, the wind became a factor early on as the offense had its struggles once again. The defense gave up an early score and that was it for the rest of the day. The Red squad started clicking on all cylinders by the time this game was all said and done and finished of their day with a 22-6 victory. Coach Jeff is looking forward to next week saying, “these next two teams are no pushovers and we need to be ready to go.” The Red squad has drawn the Mustangs and Bombers in next week’s matchups and look to keep it rolling.

The 5/6 grade squad had two of the more entertaining games of the day coming down to the wire in both. The first game they battled back and forth getting a late interception to bring the score to 8-10 with time left for one final heave into the end zone. They hurried to the line and threw the “Hail Mary bomb” which just barely fell incomplete in the end zone. They moved on to their second match up with the Riverhawks who had some players with speed on both sides of the ball. That did not slow down these gritty 5/6 Braves. Down 14-6 with time winding down the Braves came up with an interception to pull within 8 points, but time was not on their side as the Riverhawks ate up the clock and survived a close battle with our 5/6 grade Braves squad.  Coach Ben said he was proud of the way the kids fought back and responded after being down early in the matchups and with a full week of practice he expects these kids to bounce back strong.

Closing out the day the Braves took on a speedy Suns team going score for score on both of the teams’ first drives making it 8-8. The Braves continued to move the ball down the field but had a few drives stall out in the red zone. They ended up battling the Suns to a 20-8 loss and looked to put it behind them as they moved on to their next matchup. They faced off against a Riverhawk team who played physical on both sides of the ball. If you didn’t catch this game, you missed a barn burner, with both teams going score for score all the way to the end. There was a controversial touchdown called back which left the game at 23-23 tie when it was all said and done. Coach Micha said, “I’m proud of my kids today they went out and competed and showed a lot of character the way they battled out there today.” Look for this team to put one in the W column in week 2.

As an organization I couldn’t be happier on how things went this weekend. Remember, we pride ourselves in showing good sportsmanship not only as players and coaches but as parents and fans as well.  Let’s have a great week of practice and get after it again this weekend.  Go Braves!!!
